Fountain of Youth
Open tabs, hyperfixation meals, walking 10k steps, and my first podcast episode!
Greetings, fellow earthlings. I hope you didn’t stare at the sun without eclipse glasses, and if you did, then I don’t know what to tell you. It was a little cloudy in Toronto, but I was lucky enough to get a glimpse of the action. What a time to be alive! We are really just tiny species!
Open Tabs
A24 dropped the trailer for MaXXXine this week, and it looks great, although I will probably never watch it because I am easily terrified. I also haven’t seen Pearl or X, and I feel like I should probably watch those first before going into MaXXXine.
I love Chaka Khan, and I loved this interview by Ann Friedman for The Gentlewoman’s Issue n28, Autumn and Winter 2023.
Chaka might have loved the music and the recording process, but, especially in those early days, she found the business incredibly isolating. The promotional tours, with all their planes and hotel rooms, were especially rough. “It’s a very lonely walk in life, there by yourself all the time,” she tells me. When Chaka found out she was pregnant when she was 20 – her relationship with her husband was by then on-again, off-again – a music executive scolded her: “How are we going to make a star out of you if you’re going to have babies?” Chaka shot back, “Listen, motherfucker, I’m gonna have babies and be a star – with or without you. How ’bout that?”
And boy, did she really become a star.
Two good things from SSENSE
From Beyonce to Bella Hadid, everyone is a cowgirl now.
They’re having a 20% off sale on full-priced items (app only). Not sponsored! I’m simply spreading the word.
I’m obsessed with Survivor right now and have watched this ‘Best of Rick Devens’ video compilation twice already.
I recently rewatched Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel, and I’m feeling extra inspired to dress up. Her autobiography, D.V., is on my list of things to buy.
Sabrina Brier talks about facing your fears for The Creative Independent:
I am now at a point in my life where some of my dreams are seemingly coming true, and part of those dreams have a lot to do with having an audience to experience those things that go on in your imaginative brain and having a place to put them. But with that dream coming true comes that pressure, especially coming from the internet where so much of rising from the internet has to do with the people who are uplifting you.
I’m contemplating if I should buy this community cookbook from Mother Tongue.
Hyperfixation Meals
The chocolate tahini granola obsession is still going strong. I made a new batch earlier and added instant coffee for an extra pick-me-up. It made the chocolate flavours come out even more. Highly recommend! Recipe here.
What is it about a peanut butter and banana toast that is so satisfying? I’ve been eating it once a day, and I can’t seem to get enough. I don’t even add anything else to it. Just a plain ol’ whole wheat toast, creamy peanut butter, and banana slices.
10k steps a day
Keeps the doctor away? Maybe. 10k is the magic number I often hear as the number of daily steps to take for good health. For the past three months, this is exactly what I’ve been doing, and I can say my endurance has gotten a lot better. I actually enjoy a long walk now without feeling exhausted, and I’ve gotten to a point where I don’t even have to try hard to get my steps in. I usually walk 45 minutes every morning, then I just go about a day and walk for another 20 minutes after dinner. I’m not a doctor, so I can’t say for sure if walking 10k steps is the solution to prevent potential diseases, but I do know that it has made me feel a lot healthier.
The first episode of my podcast is out now! You can listen to me ramble about how I’ve detached myself from social media here. Thank you so much for reading this week’s newsletter, and I hope you have a great weekend!
