Growing up, my mom would always make silog, a classic Filipino breakfast that consists of fried rice and eggs. I remember it being a staple in our household, not necessarily because it was cheap and easy to make (although those are great factors), but there was something about its simplicity and warmth that I just couldn’t get enough of.
As I’ve gotten older, I crave a variation of rice and eggs almost daily — it’s become my go-to comfort food. You’ll see different ways to prepare it in other cuisines, like the Japanese tamago kake gohan and Korean gyeran bap. The combination of steamed white rice and the creaminess of the egg offers a satisfying bite, no matter how it’s made — and it never fails to satisfy my stomach and tastebuds.
This week’s recipe is not so much of a recipe. In fact, there is no recipe at all. It’s rice and eggs, for heaven’s sake! You steam some rice, fry an egg, season it however you like, and call it a meal. That said, I do want to take this opportunity to give you more ideas on how to prepare it so you can eat different variations of it every single day of the week. Here is a list of suggestions, as well as links to actual recipes you can follow.
